Workforce Investment Act

The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) is a federally funded program through the US Department of Labor.  It is an equal opportunity program that provides $3,000 worth of free computer training to those who have recently become unemployed or been laid off.  New Horizons Computer Learning Center is currently working with several state agencies to provide computer training that can aid in finding a new career.

To take advantage of this opportunity, follow this simple procedure.

1.  Contact Keith McFadden at New Horizons at 913-381-6157, ext. 178.

2.  Go to any unemployment office and request the WIA Pre-Application Package. Complete it and turn it in to be processed. Tell them that you are interested in the $3,000 WIA grant for training at New Horizons Computer Learning Center.  When applying, you will need to bring the following:

     •  US citizenship status
     •  Date of birth
     •  Social Security number
     •  Selective Service registration
     •  Proof of address/residency
     •  Letter of termination or layoff

3.  The unemployment office will let you know if you qualify for the grant and will guide you through the remainder of the application process.

Upon approval, you will be entitled to $3,000 worth of computer training and may take as many applications classes as needed and up to 2 technical classes. When you meet with a New Horizons representative, the classes that will be most helpful to achieve your goals will be determined.

The unemployment office or the Workforce Development Center can also help with unemployment counseling, job development and placement, classroom training, and on-the-job training.

Some examples of applications classes offered by New Horizons are: Corel DRAW 10, Dreamweaver 4, Flash 5, Pagemaker 6.5, Photoshop 6.0 and Quark Express 4.0.
